The 4th Wall

Chinese Paintings from Japanese Collections

In response to this first major exhibition in America to explore the history of collecting Chinese paintings in Japan over a period of six centuries, we propose a journey into one of the works. Just as in the film convention where the 4th wall is broken when an actor speaks directly to the audience, we aim to reach into various of the 19 paintings though a method of hypnosis, thus bridging time and distance and making these works literally con-temporary (con- ‘together with’ + tempus, tempor- ‘time’).

A project by Marcos Lutyens and Yi-Ping Hou and curated by Christina Yu Yu PH.D.
